Microsoft Power BI Certification: PL-300 Exam Prep

Q: What certification will I receive after passing PL-300?

Candidates who meet Microsoft’s requirements earn the Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate credential. The certification validates skills in preparing, modelling, visualising, analysing, managing and securing data with Power BI.

Q: What score do I need to pass PL-300?

You need a score of 700 or higher to pass PL-300. Microsoft uses a scaled scoring system, so the passing score does not represent a simple percentage of questions answered correctly.

Build the skills needed to work towards Microsoft Power BI certification and strengthen your knowledge of data analysis. The PL-300 exam measures your ability to prepare, model, visualise and analyse data with Microsoft Power BI. It also covers managing and securing Power BI content. Our learning approach helps you understand the core areas of the exam through clear concepts and practical exercises. Whether you work with reports or business data, PL-300 preparation can help you develop skills that support your professional goals.

What is Microsoft Power BI Certification (PL-300)?

PL-300 is the exam linked to the Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate credential. It focuses on the skills that data analysts use to turn raw information into clear business insights.

Candidates need to understand how to prepare data, build data models, create reports, analyse information and manage Power BI content. Microsoft also expects candidates to know Power Query and Data Analysis Expressions (DAX).

The Microsoft Power BI certification gives you a recognised credential after you meet Microsoft’s certification requirements. It can help you show your Power BI knowledge on your CV and professional profile.

Key Features of Microsoft Power BI

Microsoft Power BI brings several tools together to help users prepare, explore, and present business data. Understanding these features also builds a useful foundation for the skills covered in the PL-300 exam.

DA-100 vs PL-300: What Changed?

DA-100 was the previous exam for Microsoft’s Power BI data analyst credential. Microsoft retired the DA-100 exam on 31 March 2022 and replaced it with PL-300.

PL-300 reflects the skills Microsoft expects from a Power BI data analyst. Its measured skills focus on four main areas:

Prepare the data
Model the data
Visualise and analyse the data
Manage and secure Power BI

If you have old DA-100 learning materials, check them against Microsoft’s current PL-300 study guide. The exam objectives can change as Microsoft updates Power BI and the skills linked to the data analyst role.

PL-300 Exam Format & Structure

Knowing the exam structure can help you plan your preparation. Microsoft gives candidates 100 minutes to complete the PL-300 assessment. The exam is proctored and may contain interactive components.

Candidates need a score of 700 or higher to pass. Microsoft uses scaled scoring, so a score of 700 should not be read as a direct percentage of correct answers.

Microsoft also provides an exam sandbox. You can use it to explore the exam environment and become familiar with the types of interactions you may see during a Microsoft certification exam.

Skills Measured in the PL-300 Exam

The PL-300 exam measures skills across the main stages of working with data in Power BI. Building knowledge in each area can give you a stronger base for Microsoft Power BI certification preparation.

Prepare the Data

Learn how to connect to different data sources and review data before analysis. You should understand how to clean, transform and load information with Power Query.

Model the Data

Build data models that connect information from different tables. This area includes relationships, calculations, DAX measures and ways to improve the structure and performance of a data model.

Visualise and Analyse the Data

Create reports that make business information easier to understand. You should know how to select suitable visuals, organise report pages, apply filters and explore patterns within your data.

Manage and Secure Power BI

Understand how to manage Power BI content after creating reports. This area covers workspaces, content distribution, data refresh and methods for controlling access to business information.

Prerequisites for Power BI Certification

Microsoft does not list another certification as a required prerequisite for PL-300. However, Microsoft classifies the credential at an intermediate level, so practical Power BI knowledge can help you prepare.

Before taking the exam, build a sound understanding of:

Power Query and data preparation
Data models and table relationships
DAX calculations and measures
Reports and data visualisation
Power BI workspaces
Data access and security

Knowledge of Excel and basic data concepts can also provide a useful starting point. Focus on applying these skills to real datasets instead of memorising definitions.
